Albert Ramos-Vinolas v John Millman Head to Head

There have been two previous encounters between these two players and rather coincidentally, both came at the Winston-Salem Open – six years apart. In the first, in 2016, it was Millman who won in three sets before Ramos-Vinolas got his revenge in their return encounter last year.

Ramos-Vinolas Coming off Successive Defeats

Ramos-Vinolas was involved in the United Cup last week but unfortunately for him and for his side, Spain, he failed to make much of those two chances he got.

Starting out against Britain’s Dan Evans, Ramos-Vinolas fell to a three-set defeat despite coming back strongly in the second set. And his fortunes didn’t get any better against Jason Kubler, who again took three sets to knock the Spaniard off his perch.

On the one hand Ramos-Vinolas would be disappointed to have lost in both those matches, but here’s the deal.

The Spaniard hasn’t quite been at his best while on hard court surfaces, with clay being his favourite by some distance. His career stats prove that – a 186-151 win-loss on clay as compared to 74-130 on hard court.

Which is also why, despite being ranked 110 places above his opponent in this encounter, Ramos-Vinolas might not have it easy here.

Millman Forced into Qualifiers after a Poor Couple of Seasons

It was as recently as in 2021 that Millman was ranked 38th in the world, just five places away from his career-best. He did not have his best year though and that fell to 90th before ending the season on 72nd.

Any thoughts of improving back to his best vanished quite quickly last season when Millman managed only nine main draw wins on the ATP circuit in the entire year.

As a result of that, Millman dropped down to 160th on the ATP charts and only a couple of Challenger results going his way ensured he ended the year a marginally better at 147th.

This has forced Millman to play in the qualifiers in both these Adelaide tournaments. He was knocked out in the first qualifying round last week by Vasek Pospisil before coming through this week with a couple of wins in the qualifiers.

Can he put one across the clay-court specialist?

Ramos-Vinolas v Millman Prediction and Tip

This could be interesting encounter with Ramos-Vinolas having the experience but struggling on this surface while Millman struggling with form overall but knowing his way around hardcourt sufaces.
