Sherif Yet to Prove Herself on Hard Court

Mayar Sherif has made steady progress on the tour over the last two years and last year was particularly significant as she not only picked up her maiden title but also broke into the top 50 for the first time in her career, peaking to a career-high of no. 44 in July.

The Egyptian, currently ranked no. 52nd in the world, has shown a lot of promise on clay but is yet to make an impact on hard courts.

In 2022, Sherif won her maiden WTA title by beating Maria Sakkari in the final of the Emilia Romagna Open. In addition, she also won three WTA 125 titles in Marbella, Karlsruhe and Chile, finishing the year with a 30-17 record. All her titles came on clay.

Sherif stared the 2023 season in Adelaide, but couldn’t make the main draw after falling in the qualifying rounds. She won her first qualifier against Lizette Cabrera in straight sets but was outplayed by Marta Kostyuk in the second qualifying round.

Can she find some rhythm on hard court?

Parrizas Diaz Comes Through Qualifiers

Nuria Parrizas Diaz found her way to the main draw with a straight sets win over Wang Xinyu in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

The straight sets win came a day after Parrizas Diaz rebounded from a set down to eliminate Yue Yuan 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the first qualifying round.

Parrizas Diaz recently represented Spain in the inaugural United Cup. She was edged out in her first singles match by Katie Swan of Great Britain, but scored a dominant win over Maddison Inglis of Australia.

The 31-year-old, who won her first two WTA 125 titles last year, had a 26-31 overall record in 2022, which included an 11-14 record on hard courts. .

Parrizas Diaz has won 22 ITF titles from 38 finals. She will be hoping to at least reach a WTA final this year. Can she achieve that in Hobart?
