Tamara Zidansek v Ysaline Bonaventure Head to Head

They met once in Rabat in 2019 and Bonaventure won that contest in three sets.

Zidansek Storms into the Main Draw

After a disappointing first-round exit from Auckland, Tamara Zidansek has found some form in the qualifying rounds in Hobart.

The world no. 88, who thrashed Zara Larke 6-0, 6-1 in the first qualifying round on Saturday, scored a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Diane Parry in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

In both the matches, she dropped serve just once, while dominating her opponents for most of the contest.

Zidansek had a tough start to the season after she was handed a 2-6, 1-6 drubbing by Lauren Davis in Auckland.

The 25-year-old had shot to fame in 2021 when she reached the semifinals of the French Open, claimed her maiden WTA title in Lausanne and also broke into the top 50. But she struggled to deliver a similar performance in 2022. Zidansek, who went 30-20 in 2021, went 21-24 last year.

Her best on the tour was a semifinal finish in Adelaide-2. Apart from that, there was very little that she did on the tour or even at the lower level. However, at the back end of the season, she did reach an ITF final on hard court only to finish runner-up.

A solid clay court player, she found more success on hard courts last year. She will be looking to build on the start that she has got in the qualifying rounds in Hobart.

Bonaventure in Fine Form

Facing Zidansek in the first round will be Ysaline Bonaventure, who comes into the tournament in terrific form.

The 28-year-old Belgian is off to a 5-1 start in 2023, thanks to her run from qualifiers to semifinal in Auckland.

Bonaventure defeated Elsa Jacquemot and Arantxa Rus in the qualifying rounds and kept that form going in the main draws. She came back from a set down in the first two rounds to beat Caty McNally and Rebecca Marino respectively and then handed Leylah Fernandez a 6-4, 6-2 rout in the quarterfinals.

Bonaventure’s stunning run eventually ended with a straight sets defeat to Rebeka Masarova in the semifinals.

Last year, she had broken into the top 100 for the first time in her career.

Yet to reach a tour-level final, Bonaventure featured in four ITF finals in 2022, winning one of them. In all, she has won 12 ITF titles from 25 finals.

Zidansek v Bonaventure Prediction and Tip

Given how Bonaventure played in Auckland, she is a favourite in this contest. Expect her to edge out the Slovenian in the opening round.
