World no. 71 Maria Tatjana comes into the tournament as the winner of an ITF tournament in Pune, India. The German player defeated Nigina Abduraimova 6-1, 6-1 in the final of the tournament on Saturday to lift her 17th ITF title and an 11th on hard court.
Tatjana also has two WTA titles to her name, with the second coming last year in Bogota during a 50-30 season (across levels).
The 35-year-old’s biggest moment last year was a surprise run to the semifinals in Wimbledon. She had reached the third round of a major just once in her career, but on the grass court major last year, she knocked out seeded players in Sorana Cirstea, Maria Sakkari and Jelena Ostapenko, en route the final four before falling to Ons Jabeur in three.
Maria was also a semifinalist in Seoul last year and won an ITF title in Rome.
This year, the German has won just one of four main draw matches at the tour level. She lost the openers in Auckland and the Australian Open, but won her first round match in Hobart before falling in the round of 16.
She is seeded no. sixth in Hua Hin and will be hoping to carry her Pune form into the tournament.

Eala Reaches the Main Draw
The Philippines’ Alex Eala made it to the main draw with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Kristina Dmitruk in the second qualifying round on Sunday.
Ranked no. 214th in the world, Eala saved 3 of 4 break points and converted 4 of 6 to beat the Belarusian 6-2, 7-5.
In the first qualifying round on Saturday, the Filipino had beaten China’s Han Xinyun 6-1, 7-6 (8-6).
The 17-year-old, who won the junior U.S. Open title last year, had become the first Filipino player to win a junior grand slam title. She finished with a 45-20 record last year, playing mostly at the junior level and winning four ITF junior titles.
Eala is 3-2 this year. In addition to the two qualifying round wins in Hua Hin, the left-hander also won a qualifying round match in ITF Canberra. She lost the second qualifying round match though and also the first qualifying round at the Australian Open.

Maria is vastly experienced, while Eala is just starting her career. The former is also in terrific form having won an ITF title on Saturday. Expect Eala to put up some resistance but Maria to win the opener.
