Wang Loses to Keys in Melbourne
This new crop of Chinese young players is certainly one to keep an eye on both on the men’s and women’s tours. And 21-year-old Xinyu Wang is destined for a big season at Tour level.
Wang won her second main draw match at the Australian Open, beating Storm Hunter in straight sets. But unlike last year, she stumbled in the second round to a heavy favorite in Madison Keys.
The Chinese young gun could not threaten the American’s serve many times in the match and was overwhelmed by Keys’ power. But at least on the upside, she wouldn’t be facing such a caliber of player in Hua Hin in the early stages.
Wang reached the quarterfinal in Hobart just before the year’s first Grand Slam, losing to eventual winner Lauren Davis.

Zuger Beats Home Hope to Qualify
Joanne Zuger came through two rounds of qualifying to reach her first main draw of 2023. After humbling Ivanna Yastremska (Dayana’s younger sister), 6-1 6-0, she faced a much sterner test against Thailand’s Peangtern Plipuech.
Zuger took nearly two hours, as she battled to a 7-5 6-3 victory. She staged an incredible comeback in the first set, storming from 0-4 down, and then pinching the set with successive breaks towards the end.
It was more of the same in the second set, as Zuger recovered from dropping her serve before digging herself out of a hole. The World No. 195 will need a beat showing in the main draw. She tallied seven double faults, with zero aces. But on the bright side, she landed 72% of her first serves.
Zuger will be looking to build on her runner-up finish at the W40 Bhopal ITF a week ago.
Wang v Zuger Prediction and Tip
Zuger struggled a fair bit in her qualifying match against Plipuech on Sunday. And she cannot afford to give away opportunities against a player on the rise. Wang looks nailed on to return to winning ways in Thailand.
