Marin Cilic v Gael Monfils Head to Head
Cilic and Monfils have met thrice in their careers so far and interestingly, the Frenchman has won all of those three matches. He presently leads the Croat by 3-0, with his last win coming in the 2018 edition of the Rio Open.
Monfil’s Sensational Start to the Season
The World No. 23 had a slow start to the year at the Australian Open, where he lost in the second round to the young American Taylor Fritz in four sets. Thereafter, however, Monfils staged a brilliant comeback on the tour and staked his claim as a worthy, top 20 player.
In the Sofia Open, he reached the semifinal after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas. He ultimately lost to Daniil Medevev. He then travelled to Rotterdam where he won his first ATP 500 Series title since the 2016 Washington Open.
It was undoubtedly one of the best performances by Monfils in a long time. Starting with David Goffin, he moved on to defeat Andreas Seppi, Medvedev and finally, Stan Wawrinka in the final. With that, his tally now stands at 9 wins and just two losses for this season.
Cilic’s Slow Start to the Year
While most of the players have played in at least a couple of tournaments so far, Cilic has only participated in the Australian Open. Over there, he made it as far as the fourth round where he lost to Roberto Bautista Agut.
Since then, he has been really quiet with Dubai being his first appearance.
Owing to his lack of form and play, he has also dropped down to the 10th place in the rankings and he now stands to slip further below. He had a decent spell last year when he won the ATP London and later took his nation to the Davis Cup glory, defeating France in the final.
