Dusan Lajovic v Juan Pablo Varillas Head to Head
This will be the first career meeting between World No. 89 Dusan Lajovic and World No. 94 Juan Pablo Varillas.

The Golden Swing is forming an important part of Dusan Lajovic’s schedule, and the Serbian will be delighted to return to the clay courts.
Lajovic hasn’t tasted a match win outside clay since Wimbledon, benefitting from a retirement by Pablo Carreno Busta. His return to the Challenger Tour to play clay-court tournaments in the second half of last season paid handsome rewards.
He clinched the Mas Palomas Challenger at the start of December – his first title at that level in five years and which contributed to retaining his top 100 status.
Currently ranked 89th in the rankings, Lajovic began his 2023 campaign with back-to-back defeats, first in the qualifying rounds in Auckland to Christopher Eubanks and then to Denis Shapovalov in four sets at the Australian Open.
He is set to make his Cordoba Open bout when he plays Juan Pablo Varillas.

Varillas Falls to Diaz Acosta in Concepcion
Juan Pablo Varillas’s return to clay did not result in an instant return to form. The World No. 94 was beaten in three sets by Facundo Diaz Acosta in the second round of the Concepcion Challenger.
However, the Peruvian will be expected to pose a huge challenge to Dusan Lajovic on his second main draw appearance at the Cordoba Open.
Varillas has broken the ATP’s top 100 in spite of a losing effort at the Australian Open where he shockingly came close to upsetting Alexander Zverev before falling in five.
Last year he also very nearly pulled off a seismic shock in the first round of the French Open, taking a two-sets-to-love lead against Auger-Aliassime before letting his lead slip and eventually the match.
Such lapses are unforgivable at Tour level and Varillas is learning the hard lesson. If he intends to be a mainstay in the world’s top 100, he will need to close out his matches from a winning position.

We cannot expect Lajovic to make an instant impact now that he is transitioning from hard courts to the grueling demands of clay. Although this could be close, the Peruvian should have a slight edge given his excellence on this surface.
