Michael Mmoh had an impressive start to 2023, reaching the third round of a major for the first time in his career, when he made it to the round of 32 at the Australian Open. What’s more? He knocked out AlexanderZverev in the second round of the tournament.
The 25-year-old Mmoh couldn’t go further in the tournament as he went down to JJ Wolf in straight sets in the third round. On Monday, he will be playing for the first time since that defeat two weeks ago.
Mmoh had made it to the main draw in Melbourne as a lucky loser. He had won the first two qualifying rounds but had lost to Aleksander Vukic. He however got lucky and then took the opportunity with both hands. First beating Lokoli Laurent in the first round and then stunning Zverev.
Mmoh had begun the season in Pune, where he won the opener but fell in the second round.
This is the first time he will be playing in Dallas. He was 44-29 last year, reaching four Challenger finals and winning two of them in Cary and Fairfied. He is at his best on hard courts and has played all his Challenger finals on the surface.

Wu Reaches Cleveland Final
Facing Mmoh is Yibing Wu, who was preparing to play in the final of the Cleveland Challenger while we were writing the preview.
Seeded no. 2 in the Challenger event, the Chinese player knocked out Stefan Kozlov in the quarterfinal and Tenys Sandgren in the semifinal to reach his first final of the season.
Wu, who reached a career-high ranking of no. 112 last week, featured in four Challenger and one ITF final last year. A four-time champion on the Challenger Tour, he won three titles at that level last year, triumphing in Orlando, Rome and Indianapolis and finishing runner-up in Seoul.
Wu finished last year with an exceptional 40-7 record. While most of those wins came at the lower level tournaments, it was at the U.S. Open where he caught the eye. Making his Grand Slam debut he came into the main draw through the qualifiers, and then knocked out Nikoloz Basilashvili and Nuno Borges in the first two rounds. Daniil Medvedev eventually ended his promising run in the third round.
Wu didn’t start off well this season, but he has found form in Cleveland and will look to begin well in Dallas.

This is going to be an interesting contest. Mmoh is slightly more experienced on the tour and that should help him. This match is expected to go the distance, with Mmoh edging past the Chinese player.
