Trevisan Coming off a Shaky Start

With a tally of 2-4, World No. 25 Martina Trevisan hasn’t had the best of starts to the new season.

The 29-year-old Italian first competed in the United Cup, where she made it to the final with her country. In the five matches she played, she won only two – both three-setters against the Norwegian Malene Helgo (ranked outside the top 300) and Maria Sakkari. The defeats came at the hands of Beatriz Haddad Maia, Iga Swiatek, and Jessica Pegula.

She next featured in the Australian Open, where she was dismissed by Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the first round itself, 3-6, 2-6.

Martina rose to prominence last season following her breakthrough run at the French Open, where she made it to the semis. That run was followed by a title feat in Rabat – all of which helped her reach the top 30.

While she has always been a decent performer on clay, the same can’t be said of the other courts. Of the 22 losses she clocked in 2022, 12 came outside the clay season. With that in mind, Trevisan will likely struggle to deliver on the turfs of Abu Dhabi too.

Mertens Looking to Tap into Doubles Form

Elise Mertens, singles #32 and doubles #6, most recently played in the Australian Open, where she reached the third round before losing to Aryna Sabalenka. She did beat Garbine Muguruza in the opener, however.

Before that, the Belgian incurred a series of disappointing losses – notably against Maryna Zanevska in the Hobart International round one and to Sakkari in the United Cup.

With 27 doubles finals to her name (16 titles, 11 runner-ups) – which includes four majors, two WTA Finals, and eight WTA 1000 events, Mertens is a prodigious player who can surprise. Her previous season was comparatively better than Trevisan’s, as she closed at 29-23 (21-15 on hard courts).

Elise’s highlights from the year include seven doubles finals and one singles title.

Trevisan v Mertens Prediction and Tip

At 3/10, Mertens is the heavy favourite here, and it is not difficult to see why. Trevisan is struggling, while Mertens has the rich experience and pedigree to make quick work of her opponent.
