Karolina Pliskova v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head

The two players have an intense rivalry between them, and this encounter in Abu Dhabi will be their 12th meeting. Pliskova holds a massive lead by 9-2, beating her in four of their last five bouts – the most recent being in the 2021 WTA Finals.

Muguruza in a Rut

Since reaching the final in WTA Finals in 2021, Garbine Muguruza is yet to reach the same stage on tour again. She closed last season at 12-17 – owing to which she dropped out of the top five to the 55th position.

Her form woes continued into the new year as she now finds herself at the 82nd spot. Three tournaments in, the Spaniard is yet to win a match.

The 29-year-old played in both versions of Adelaide International but was handed tricky opening fixtures against Bianca Andreescu and Belinda Bencic. In the Australian Open, she played Elise Mertens in the opening game but lost in three sets. Most recently, she was in Lyon where 18-year-old Linda Noskova handed her a 1-6, 4-6 defeat in the first match.

As a two-time Grand Slam champion with 10 career titles to her name, Muguruza is well-experienced and skilled to go deep in any tournament she plays. But in light of her present struggles with form, she will need to take things slow and focus on giving her best on the court. Of course, it doesn’t make it any easy when she is up against an opponent she has lost several times in her career.

Pliskova on a Resurgent Path

Karolina Pliskova will be pleased with her start to the new season. Even though it hasn’t been picture-perfect, it is still considerable progress.

After losing early in Adelaide 1 and 2 – respectively to Jelena Ostapenko and Danielle Collins – the 30-year-old Czech reached the quarterfinal at the Australian Open. Her exploits there entailed straight-set wins over Xiyu Wang, Yulia Putintseva, Varvara Gracheva, and Shuai Zhang. She ultimately lost to Magda Linette.

Pliskova struggled with a hand injury in the first half of 2022 – which put her out for three months and slowed her subsequent comeback on tour. She spent most of the season rebuilding her momentum and eventually closed with late-round appearances in the US Open and Canadian Open.

Pliskova v Muguruza Prediction and Tip

World No. 20 Pliskova is the heavy favourite here. Muguruza has her work cut out, and if the Czech’s recent form is any indication, it means that she is facing a Herculean job of moving into round two.
