Daniel Struggled For Most Parts of 2022

Taro Daniel is 3-3 overall and 1-1 at the top level in 2023. His only main draw appearance this year came at the Australian Open, where he won his opener against Ernesto Escobedo but fell in the second round to Denis Shapovalov.

Daniel had begun the season by winning the first qualifying round in Adelaide, but he couldn’t make the main draw after losing the second qualifier. He then lost the first qualifying round in Auckland, before going 1-1 in the Melbourne major.

Most recently, he represented Japan at the Davis Cup, beating Kacper Zuk of Poland.

The 2018 Istanbul Open champion, Daniel was 13-19 on the tour last year. He reached two quarterfinals in Belgrade and Naples and made it to the third round of the Australian Open. But apart from those three tournaments he never really looked threatening last year, even struggling on the Challenger Tour.

Can he impress on his Dallas debut?

Gomez Showed Good Form in Cleveland Challenger

Emilio Gomez is coming off a good run in the Cleveland Challenger this week. The Ecuadorean defeated Ezekiel Clark, Jack Pinnington Jones and Gabriel Diallo on his way to the semifinals but failed to reach the final after going down fighting against Aleksandar Kovacevic.

Gomez will be playing his first tour level main draw match of the season on Monday. He brings a 4-3 season record into the tournament. Besides the three wins in Cleveland he also won the first qualifying round match at the Australian open, beating Liam Broady but he fell to Jan-Lennard Struff in the second qualifying round.

He had earlier lost in the opening round of the Canberra Challenger.

Ranked no. 106, Gomez featured in six Challenger finals last year, winning two of them. The 31-year-old, however, played very little at the tour level, finishing with a 2-5 record.

Daniel v Gomez Prediction and Tip

Daniel plays consistently at the top level, and is far more experienced than Gomez. That experience should come in handy in Monday’s opener in Dallas. Daniel is expected to go through.
