Indian Wells Open 2019 Preview:
Women’s Draw:
Some of the top ranked WTA stars are billed to feature at this year’s Indian Wells Open slated for March 4 as they all prepare for an exciting contest. The 31st edition of the Indian Wells Open will be held at the tennis garden in Indian Wells California, US.
This year’s edition is gearing up to be a colossal battle of wits as many of the top seeds who have not done so well in recent tournaments will be looking to give a strong showing in California. Some of the highly ranked players who lost to giant killers in earlier WTA events since the start of the year will hope to avoid further embarrassment under the spotlight in California.
Current world number one Naomi Osaka hasn’t fared too well since winning her second Grand Slam title in Australia this year. She has struggled for form and has also had to deal with the extra spotlight since she fired her former coach, Sascha Bajin.

Osaka won her first ever WTA title in this tournament last year to kick-start her rise to stardom but she suffered a humiliating loss to world number 67 Kristina Mladenovic at the Dubai Duty Free championship last week in straight sets. The Japanese will be hoping to do better this time around.
World number two, Simona Halep has had her own fair share of defeats this year.
She had a good showing in Dubai losing in the quarter final to eventual winner, Belinda Becic of Switzerland. She has another opportunity to make amends at Indian Wells.
One player coming to California in good form is Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic who lost to Becic in the final in Dubai. Kvitova has been in good form since the start of the year and will pose a huge threat to other top seeds gunning for the title.
2016 champion, Sloane Stephens is another player to watch out for. Barring injuries and last minute withdrawals, the American will definitely feature at this year’s event. Stephens often plays well in Cali and may be looking to prove a point next month when the tournament commences.
Men’s Draw:
A lot has been said about the dawn of a new age in tennis and this year’s classic might just add more fuel to the fire about the old guard giving way to the new.
The big “three” in men’s tennis Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will contend for the title this year and so will some of the new names bursting into the scene in great form.
Fresh from winning the first Grand Slam title of the year in Australia, Djokovic comes into this tournament in fine form. The 15-time Grand Slam winner will be aiming to win a career high sixth Indian Wells title to surpass Federer on the honors list.
The Serbian has witnessed a career resurgence of late after battling with poor form and injury the previous year and bookmakers consider him the favorite for this year’s title.

Although Nadal lost to Djokovic in Australia, the Spaniard played some great tennis in Melbourne and should be considered amongst the favorites to win the tournament he has won thrice before now.
Coming up against the Serbian in great form, he showed great composure to stretch the game before succumbing to defeat and will hope to do well this month as he prepares for the upcoming French Open which he has a penchant for winning in two month’s time.
Federer won his 100th career title in Dubai and is another contender in California. He shares the record of having won the highest number of titles along with Djokovic and many consider him to be a Masters specialist having done well in this tournament over the last few years.
Players outside the big three shouldn’t be overlooked however since we’ve witnessed so many upsets this year already. Fresh from losing the Acapulco Open in Mexico to Nick Kyrgios, Alexander Zverev is a dangerous opponent on his day and should not be rated any less for the win.
The German has won three Masters title and may yet win his fourth if blessed by good form and fortune
Stefanos Tsitsipas broke into the top ten this year and is expected to do well and so is Danil Medvedev who won his fourth career title in Sofia last month. Stan Wawrinka will also be joined by Gael Monfils and Kei Nishikori. All these players will arrive California with a point to prove.

What Happened Last Year at the Indian Wells Open?
Roger Federer was the defending champion going into the previous season’s Indian Wells Masters and in the absence of Rafael Nadal and a struggling Novak Djokovic, he was also one of the top favourites to win the men’s singles title.
And much to the script, Federer made it through to the title-decider with just one set dropped – one that came in the semi-final against Borna Coric.
In the final, he met the Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, who, much like Federer lost just one set and that was against Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Del Potro came away winner in the final but not before Federer had fought like a champion, coming back from a set down to force the encounter in the final set tie-breaker. The Argentine finally won 7-2 in the tie-breaker.
Among the other men’s players who went deep into the tournament included Coric and Milos Raonic, both of whom entered the semi-finals and 10th seeded who was the losing quarter-finalist and struggling for form.
The women’s singles title went to Japan’s Naomi Osaka, whose turnaround came at this Indian Wells Open. She was an unseeded player in the 2018 BNP Paribas Open, but went on to win the title after dropping just one set and in the process dropped just one set.
Osaka claimed some big-shot players in the tournament that included Maria Sharapova in the opener, Agnieszka Radwanska in second, Karolina Pliskova in the quarter-finals before crushing top-seeded Simona Halep 6-3, 6-0 in the semi-final.
She defeated Daria Kasatkina in the final, who herself had gotten the better of second seeded Caroline Wozniacki, 10th seeded Angelique Kerber and eighth seeded Venus Williams in her previous rounds.
