Roger Federer v Dominic Thiem Head to Head

In the four times that Federer and Thiem have met on the ATP Tour, the gents have won two matches apiece. They last met in the 2018 ATP Final, where the Swiss defeated Thiem comfortably in the robin round.

Furthermore, Federer’s two victories over the Austrian came on the hard surface.

Federer Closing in on his Sixth Indian Wells Title

Federer, who lost in the final of Indian Wells Masters last year after squandering three championship points to Juan Martin del Potro, has now got another chance to redeem himself. He is currently tied with Novak Djokovic at five titles each in the California desert and a win here will make him the first player to win the tournament six times.

His path to the final has been nothing short of breathtaking as he won all of his matches in straight sets. In fact, he never lost his service in Indian Wells except for one instance – his opening match against Peter Gojowczyk.

Since then, he has dispatched Stan Wawrinka, Kyle Edmund, and Hubert Hurkacz. In the semifinal, he was supposed to face Rafael Nadal but the Spaniard withdrew from the tournament, giving Federer an easy walkover.

The World No. 4 recently wrote history in Dubai when he became the second player in the Open Era to win 100 ATP singles titles. So far this year, he has lost only one match and that defeat came in the fourth round of the Australian Open to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Thiem Finds His Groove Again

Thiem, who is a two-time Madrid Open runner-up, has made it to his first final on the ATP Tour since the St. Petersburg Open last season.

This is definitely an impressive run, considering that throughout this season, Thiem hasn’t been at his best. In Doha and the Australian Open, he lost in the early rounds while in ATP Buenos Aires, he was a semifinalist. However, the Austrian failed to carry that momentum forward and lost in the first round in ATP Rio.

Therefore, in a bid to improve his form, the 25-year-old travelled to Indian Wells 12 days before the start of the event to prepare for it. Needless to mention, his hard work has paid off.

In the semifinal, he battled Milos Raonic for more than two hours and came out victorious 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-4. Before that, he got a walkover when his quarterfinal opponent Gael Monfils withdrew from the event. He also had a comfortable run against the likes of Jordan Thompson, Gilles Simon, and Ivo Karlovic.

Roger Federer v Dominic Thiem Predictions & Tips

Federer will certainly start this match as the favourite to win. Given the form he is in, plus his victory over Thiem in the ATP Finals last season, it shouldn’t be that difficult for Federer to win the Indian Wells crown once again.

On his part, the Austrian will do everything possible to stop the Swiss and can very well put up a good fight.

Tip: Federer to win: 2/7 (bet365)
