Andreescu Was a Semifinalist in Hua Hin

Bianca Andreescu will begin her Abu Dhabi campaign on Tuesday but there will be questions about her fitness as she retired from her last match in Hua Hin due to a shoulder issue.

The 2019 U.S. Open champion, who has struggled with injuries over the last couple of years, had made it to the semifinals in Hua Hin last week, but she could not complete the contest, and was forced to retire while she trailed Lesia Tsurenko 5-7, 0-4.

She had been flawless uptill that point, defeating Harriet Dart, Anastasia Zakharova and Martha Kostyuk respectively, all in straight sets.

It was the 22-year-old Canadian’s best performance so far this year. She was knocked out in the second rounds in Adelaide and the Australian Open in her first two tournaments of the season.

Andreescu has won three titles from six finals over her career. Her only final in 2022 came on grass in Bad Homburg, where she finished runner-up to Caroline Garcia. Andreeescu finished with a 20-13 record last year.

It will be interesting to see if she has recovered from the shoulder issue and is ready to go all out in Abu Dhabi.

Putintseva Comes Through Qualifiers

World no. 45 Yulia Putintseva made it to the main draw with a straight sets dubbing of Nigina Abduraimova in the second qualifying round on Monday.

Putintseva was broken thrice by the Uzbek player, but she herself converted 7 of 13 break points, and allowed Abduraimova to win just one service game during a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

The 28-year-old Kazakh had beaten Anastasia Zakharova 6-2, 7-5 in the first qualifying round on Sunday.

Putintseva is playing her fifth tournament of the season. She lost both her singles matches at the United Cup, reached the quarterfinals in Hobart and the second round at the Australian Open, but was knocked out in the opening round in Hua Hin.

A three-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist, Putintseva is a two-time champion on the tour and has finished runner-up on three occasions, but she has not reached a final since Astana in 2021. She had an overall record of 26-21 last year.

Andreescu v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

Andreescu is the better player, she looked good in Hua Hin and if she has regained her complete fitness, she should win this contest and advance to the next round.
