Sakkari Battles Past Vekic

World no. 7 Maria Sakkari is into the semifinals with a straight sets win over Donna Vekic on Friday.

Straight sets it was but not straightforward by any means, as the fifth seed Croatian went toe to toe and held five set points in the second set tiebreak. However, Sakkari saved all of them before converting her second match point to clinch the contest 6-3, 7-6 (10-8).

The Greek held her first match point at 5-4 (40-30), but she not only squandered it but also allowed Vekic to break her serve for the second time in the set and tie the set at 5-5.

The two-hour-plus contest saw Sakkari win 73% points on her first serve. She also saved 3 of 5 break points and converted 3 of 8 that she held.

As a result of the win, the Greek improved to 8-2 in 2023. She lost just one of her four matches at the United Cup and exited the Australian Open in the third round. This week, she has won three matches without dropping a set as she chases her second WTA title.

Sakkari has featured in seven tour-level finals but has won just one title and that was in Morocco in 2019. She played in four finals last year, including two WTA 1000 finals in Indian Wells and Guadalajara, but lost all of them.

This week, Sakkari began her campaign with a 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) win over Nuria Parrizas-Diaz and then knocked out Varvara Gracheva 6-4, 6-2 in the second round.

Martic Takes Down Tauson

Sixth seed Petra Martic ended lucky loser Clara Tauson’s run in the last eight stage on Friday.

After the first set started with consecutive breaks, Martic broke the Dane for a second time late in the first set to take a one-set-to-love lead. The world no. 34 then raced to a 4-0 lead in the second set, but a determined Tauson bounced back, winning the next five in a row to make things interesting.

Martic, however, regrouped and finished off the match by winning the last three games in a row for a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

Martic, who had hit 18 aces in the first two rounds, struck just one ace in the semifinal. But she converted 5 of 6 break point chances that she held and saved half of the six that she faced.

With teh win Martic is now 6-4 this year. This is the first time in four tournaments in 2023 that she has won consecutive matches. She began with a straight sets win over Marina Bassols Ribera in the opening round and then held off Alison Van Uytvanck in a three-set thriller in the round of 16.

A win will put the Croatian in a sixth career final. She has won two titles from her previous five. One was in Istanbul in 2019 and the other was in Lausanne last year.
