Djokovic Resumes after 22nd Grand Slam Title
Djokovic will return to tennis after having last featured at the Australian Open where he stumbled through the initial rounds because of an injury but still managed to capture the title. It was his 22nd Grand Slam win and one of his most emotional given what had transpired last year in Melbourne.
Not to mention the 3 cm tear on his left hamstring with which he played through most part of the competition.
The Australian Open win also propelled him back to the top of the rankings charts. He has now remained the number one player since that title victory and in doing so broken Steffi Graf’s record for most weeks as the top-ranked player, man or woman.
A five-time winner in Dubai, Djokovic is also on a 17-match winning streak dating back to the start of the ATP Finals last year.
He might not have gone beyond the quarterfinals at this tournament last season but that could so easily change given the kind of calmness Djokovic has exuded since last year’s US Open where he was not allowed to participate because of his anti-vaccination stance.

Machac Comes Through the Qualifiers
It’s that kind of luck when you come through your qualifiers, winning both of them and are drawn to face Novak Djokovic in his current form. And the player whom you have defeated in the qualifiers also makes it through as a lucky loser but faces a far easier opponent in his opener.
That’s exactly what’s transpired with Machac, who overcame Marton Fucsovics in the first qualifier before routing Matteo Arnaldi in the second and qualifying for the main draw.
This is the third ATP tournament this season he will play in the first round with Machac having not won a match yet at the highest level.
Taking on Djokovic will be an experience of his own but the teeny-weeny window of opportunity that he might have is the world number one’s absence from the sport for a month. Preparedness should not be much of a problem for the number one but Machac will hope – probably against hope – that Djokovic is a tad rusty.
Even that being the case, does Machac have the game to take out a player of reasonable quality, let alone Djokovic?
