Alexander Zverev v Christopher O’Connell Head to Head

Zverev and O’Connell have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Zverev Stumbles Past Lehecka

Jiri Lehecka has been dishing out some good results this season. At the same time, Zverev’s struggles since returning from his fitness issues have been quite well-known. Which is why his comeback-from-behind win over Lehecka would have warmed his heart no end.

Zverev was on court for over two hours before coming through 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to register just his third win at the top level and fourth including one at the Davis Cup.

Serving used to be Zverev’s bugbear before his injury last year but despite getting broken twice in the match, the German would be reasonably satisfied with how he went about that aspect of his game. He got 73% of his first serves in and won 74% of those points.

He also broke the highly-talented Lehecka three times including in the crucial ninth game of the final set to make it to the next stage.

Things should get a lot easier for Zverev, who could get more and more dangerous as he spends more time on court.

Qualifier O’Connell Goes Through Ruusuvuori

In one of the upsets of the first round, O’Connell managed to overcome the 1/2 favourite Emil Ruusuvuori in straight sets to seal his berth against Zverev.

Having made it to the main draw with wins over Kareem Al Allaf and Quentin Halys in the qualifiers, O’Connell wasn’t expected to give Ruusuvuori much of a fight. Instead he shocked him with his strong serving and equally good returning that resulted in a 7-5, 6-4 win in nearly two hours.

O’Connell, who had also made it to the quarterfinal at the Qatar Open last week, faced a mere two break-points in the entire encounter as opposed to the 11 he got off Ruusuvuori’s serve. He converted three of them including twice when his opponent was serving under pressure – at 5-5 in the first set and 3-3 in the second.

Can he now use this new-found confidence from these last two weeks to upset the Zverev apple-cart?

Zverev v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

With Zverev passing the tougher opening hurdle, we reckon he shouldn’t have a lot of problem getting past O’Connell here. Straight-setter for the German.
