Ysaline Bonaventure edged past Greece’s Despina Papamichail in the first round of the Monterrey Open.
After both players traded a break early in the first set, Bonaventure conceded a second break in the eighth game, allowing the qualifier to serve for the set at 3-5. But the Belgian got the break back immediately and then took the first set in the tiebreak.
The 28-year-old then got an early break in the second set to lead 3-0, but Papamichail came right back into the contest, winning the last five games in a row and forcing the decider.
Both payers exchanged an early break in the final set, before Bonaventura surged ahead and then she never looked back as she completed a 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-1 victory.
The win improved the Belgian to 9-7 this year. She had shown a lot of promise in the season opener in Auckland, going from qualifiers to the semifinal. But since that run she has been quiet for most parts, reaching only as far as the second round in Hobart and Merida.

Rakhimova Stuns Siniakova
Kamilla Rakhimova stunned the sixth seed Katerina Siniakova in an edge-of-the-seat opening round contest on Tuesday.
In a match that swung from one way to the other, Rakhimova saved a match point on her serve at 4-6 (30-40) in the final set. The deciding set tiebreak was an interesting one as well with Rakhimova going up a minibreak thrice but Siniakova pulling it back on all three ocacasions, but it was the fourth minibreak that proved to be decisive and handed the Russian the two hour and 52 minuute contest 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 7-6 (7-5).
Rakhimova withstood eight aces in the matches and broke her opponent four times, while getting broken on six occasions. But it was her ability to win the key points that turned the contest in her favour.
The world no. 97 had qualified for the main draw with a straight sets win over Yuliana Lizarazo and a three-set win over Kimberly Birrell in the two qualifying rounds.
She is 9-5 from all her matches having won the ITF Irapuato title two weeks ago.
Tuesday’s win was her first main draw win of the season on the tour. Can she get another on Wednesday?
Bonaventure v Rakhimova Prediction and Tip
Bonaventure has delivered at the top level this year and is in decent touch. She is also the more experienced of the two. Expect the left-handed Belgian to reach the last eight.
