South Africa’s Kevin Anderson has pulled out of the 2019 Indian Wells Masters on Saturday.
Scheduled to face Maximilian Marterer of Germany in his second round match later today, Anderson decided to opt out of the competition because of an elbow issue.
Anderson tweeted about his withdrawal, saying:
“I’m really sorry to say I’ve had to withdraw from the @BNPPARIBASOPEN. It’s been great spending some time in Indian Wells at the tournament and seeing the fans again. Thanks for the nice messages too. I am still working to get my elbow better and can’t wait to be back soon.”
It was expected to be the first meeting between Anderson and Marterer, and while the 6 ft. 8 South African wasn’t a favourite going into the tournament, he was expected to push on deep into the tournament. With six ATP titles to his name including the Maharashtra Open he won in January, this would have been a good chance to improve on his world number six ranking.
He had earlier featured at the Australian Open but went down in round two, beaten by American Frances Tiafoe and hadn’t played a competitive match since then.
Marterer, who had earlier overcome Ugo Humbert in his opening round match, will now take on the winner of the encounter between 30th seeded Laslo Djere and Guido Andreozzi.
