Filip Krajinovic stunned the 14th seeded Daniil Medvedev in straight sets to advance to the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters on Tuesday.
Medvedev, who was 1/1 to win the match in straight sets, never settled down in any kind of rhythm and was beaten in straight sets. Krajinovic won 6-3, 6-2, to seal his place in round four where he will meet the winner of the Rafael Nadal-Diego Schwartzman encounter.
The match lasted all of 78 minutes before the Serbian clinched the tie.
While Medvedev served two aces to none from Krajinovic, his three double-faults also proved crucial. To go with that, the Russian struggled with his second serve, winning only 43% of those points as opposed to 68% for the Serb.
Krajinovic faced just two break-points in the entire match and saved both of them, and won 71% of his own service points as well.
This was the first meeting between the two players, who were separated in their ATP rankings by nearing 100 ranks. What would hurt Medvedev even more than just the loss will be the fact that after such a brilliant start to the season, having won the Sofia Open title and been runner-up at Brisbane, he has had back to back poor showings.
Medvedev went down in the first round at Dubai Open and here at the Indian Wells Masters, he survived just one round before losing to a way less fancied Krajinovic.
