Stefanos Tsitsipas v Leonardo Mayer Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between Tsitsipas and the Argentine eleven years his senior.
Tsitsipas Eyeing the Semi-Finals
Tsitsipas is already one of the players of the year so far, reaching the semi-final in Melbourne, claiming his second senior career title in Marseille, and achieving another final in Dubai. Disappointment was in store for him in Indian Wells where he lost to Canadian teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime first time out, but he can make substantial amends here in Florida.
Having easily beaten American Mackenzie McDonald in the second round, he finds himself in the bottom half of the draw where many of the top seeds, including Alexander Zverev, have already been knocked out.
A semi-final, at least, looks like a distinct possibility especially given that the highest seed on his path before he gets there is the 14th seeded Marco Ceccinato.
Mayer Enjoying a Better Run than Expected
Mayer is not used to finding himself in the third round of Masters events on hard courts, being very much a clay court player (both of his ATP career wins, including his most recent victory in Nice two years ago have come on that surface).
In fact the one time he did make it to the third round at the Miami Masters was in 2015 and he finished there, turning out to be his best result ever at this tournament. A second round exit last year and four opening round losses have punctuated his results here.
He has had a disappointing year so far, with quarter-finals in Auckland and Sao Paolo the best he has managed to achieve, although he did make the Australian Open doubles semi-final with his partner Joao Sousa.
However, the draw in Miami has favoured him so far, pitching him against Swedish qualifier Mikhail Ymer in the first round, and then compatriot Guido Pella in his second round. Now the going gets much harder.
Tsitsipas v Mayer Predictions & Tips
Tsitsipas will start as heavy odds-on favourite for the match at 3/10, whilst Mayer is priced at 58/19. Whilst there are no easy matches in a Masters event, this should be as comfortable as it gets for the young Greek player.
Tip: Tsitsipas to win in straight sets: 4/5 (betway)
