The Adelaide International tennis tournament is one of the newest tournaments on the ATP and WTA calendars. There have been four editions of the women’s competition in Adelaide and three on the men’s tour
On the WTA circuit, the Adelaide International tennis tournament is played as a WTA 250 competition while it is an ATP 250 on the men’s circuit.
Over the past decade, Adelaide has had the World Tennis Challenge played in the city but it was an exhibition tournament that did not have the current players playing.
With the ATP Cup getting announced for 2020, Tennis Australia decided to end the Hopman Cup and with the Brisbane and Sydney tournaments also getting knocked off the calendar, it allowed Adelaide a chance to host this event.
What has helped is the decision of the South Australian Government to invest nearly $10 million on the tennis arena, after Tennis Australia decided to award them five-year rights for the competition.
2023 Adelaide International Schedule & Dates
There will be two separate competitions for both, the men’s and women’s Adelaide International in the 2023 edition.
The men’s edition of the Adelaide International will be held between January 9 and 14 with the final to be played on Saturday instead of the usual Sunday because of the Australian Open starting out two days later.
The qualifying rounds will be held a couple of days in the lead-up to this competition.
The women’s event at the Adelaide International will be held twice; the first in the week starting January 2 and the second one commencing on January 9.
At the first WTA Adelaide International, the competition final will be held on Sunday, January 8 while the women’s singles final in the second event will be hosted on Saturday, January 14.

What Happened at the 2022 ATP & WTA Adelaide International?
Interestingly, there were two competitions held in Adelaide in 2022, on both the men’s and women’s circuit.
Gael Monfils won the men’s singles title in the ATP Adelaide 1 by defeating Karen Khachanov in straight sets before Thanasi Kokinakkis made it his maiden ATP title by clinching it the following week. He defeated Arthur Rinderknech in the final.
The first women’s title of 2022 was won by Ash Barty who would go on to defeat the upcoming Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the final before Madison Keys overcame fellow American Alison Riske to win the other 2022 WTA Adelaide title.
No competition was held in Adelaide in 2021 because of the global pandemic with all the tournaments getting transferred to Melbourne as a result.
Third seeded Andrey Rublev had clinched the 2020 edition of the Adelaide International in the men’s singles draw, defeating South African Lloyd Harris in the final. The women’s singles trophy was won by Ash Barty who overcame Dayana Yastremska in the final.
The 2020 edition of the Adelaide International was its first ever edition but it must be quickly added this tournament replaces the ATP Brisbane & Sydney International and the WTA Sydney International that were held the previous year.
One of the reasons for the change is the introduction of the new tournament by the name of ATP Cup and the abolishing of the Hopman Cup.
