What Happened at the 2019 ATP Barcelona Open?

In 2018, it was not just Nadal but also Novak Djokovic who featured in this competition along with the likes of Dimitrov, Thiem, Goffin and some of the other top players in the tournament. As is the case with this year as well, the top 16 players, seeds, were given a bye into the second round.

What was interesting was that Djokovic, Nishikori and Schwartzman went down in round two of the tournament. Djokovic lost to Martin Klizan in three sets, Schwartzman was routed by Tsitsipas and Nishikori was down a set when he had to retire from his match.

Nadal, on the other hand, had no trouble whatsoever. As has been the case with Nadal on clay, he doesn’t just win matches, he also refuses to lose sets, and that is exactly how he went on to win the title, beating the likes of Roberto Carballes Baena, Guillermo Garcia Lopez, Klizan and David Goffin before crushing the hopes of young Greek player Tsitsipas.

Tsitsipas had earlier shocked Schwartzman and Dominic Thiem on his way to the final in which he lost 6-2, 6-1 to Nadal.

Nadal had had a sensational year in 2017 too with the Barcelona Open in his highlights reel. Year after year, the Spaniard has managed to do exceedingly well in Catalonia and 2017 was no different.

He started as the third seed and enjoyed a bye into the second round. He was placed in the same half as many big guns like Alexander Zverev, David Goffin and David Ferrer.

However, owing to a couple of early shocking upsets, Nadal’s path to the semifinal couldn’t have been any easier. He faced little resistance against the likes of Kevin Anderson, Chung Hyeon, and Horacio Zeballos to make the final where he defeated Dominic Thiem to clinch the title.
