What Happened at the 2022 China Open?

The tournament was cancelled in 2020, 2021 and 2022 because of a variety of reasons.

Dominic Thiem and Naomi Osaka won the men’s and women’s singles event respectively of the 2019 China Open.

Thiem defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the men’s singles final while the women’s event was won by Naomi Osaka who overcame Ash Barty to win the title.

Caroline Wozniacki had won the 2018 WTA Beijing title by beating Anastasija Sevastova 6-3, 6-3 in the final while Nikoloz Basilashvili was the men’s singles winner as he defeated Juan Martin del Potro in the title-decider. He won 6-4, 6-4.

Top seeded Simona Halep retired in the first round with an injury, and even the others top players in the women’s draw were ousted early, with the exception of Naomi Osaka, who made the semifinals. Sevastova defeated Osaka in the semi-final while Wozniacki was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Wang Qiang.

The other women to make it to the quarter-finals included Dominika Cibulkova, Shang Shuai, Aryna Sabalenka and Katerina Siniakova.

The men’s draw saw del Potro start off as the top seed, and he got a walkover from Fabio Fognini in the semifinal. On the other hand, Basilashvili defeated Kyle Edmund to set up the final.

The player list was particularly fetching in the women’s half, considering the star studded lineup at the previous Beijing Open. In action were top seed Simona Halep who won her first Grand Slam title at the French Open earlier in 2018 and second seeded Caroline Wozniacki.

The likes of Angelique Kerber, the world number three, defending champion Garcia, seeded fourth, and Petra Kvitova, Elina Svitolina, US Open champion Naomi Osaka and Karolina Pliskova were all on show but Serena Williams decided to withdraw from the Beijing Open last season.

Last year, the defending champion in the men’s half was Rafael Nadal, while among the ladies, it was the Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia. Unfortunately for the fans, Nadal withdrew from the competition because of his injury issues.
