What Happened at the 2018 ATP Dubai Tennis Championships?
The 2018 edition of the Dubai Duty Tennis Championships for men was quite an interesting one. For the first time in years, the tournament felt the absence of some big players like Federer, Djokovic, Murray, Wawrinka, and others. In such a scenario, the seedings were awarded to the likes of Grigor Dimitrov, Lucas Pouille, Bautista Agut, Richard Gasquet, and Damir Dzumhur.
While the line-up may seem a bit boring at first, the action definitely wasn’t. Dimitrov, Gasquet, and Dzumhur bit the dust right in the first round. Their defeats paved way for the likes of Filip Krajinovic and Malek Jaziri, both of whom reached as far as the semifinal.
That is where things got even more interesting. Bautista Agut and Lucas Pouille – the remaining two semifinalists, stepped up and reasserted their dominance over the lowly-ranked players. They eventually prevailed in their respective semifinals and moved ahead to set up the final clash.
The Spaniard won that match in straight sets. For Agut, that win also marked the biggest title of his career.
