What happened at the 2022 ATP Swedish Open?
After the defending champion Kevin Anderson retired from professional tennis, it was the fourth seeded Maxime Cressy who won the title at Newport in 2022. Cressy defeated Alexander Bublik 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in a fighting finale to lift the trophy.
Top seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime had an opening round bye but was knocked out in the second round by Jason Kubler. Andy Murray also participated in the tournament and reached the quarterfinal before falling to Bublik.
South Africa’s Kevin Anderson won the Swedish Open title in 2021, by beating American player Jenson Brooksby in the final. He won 7-6 (8), 6-4.
Brooksby had earlier sent out the top seeded Alexander Bublik in the semifinal while Brooksby surprised the seventh seeded Jordan Thompson.
The 2020 edition of the Newport Open had to be cancelled because of the pandemic-related issues.
John Isner won the title in 2019 by beating Kazakh player Alexander Bublik in the final in straight sets. He won 7-6, 6-3, which incidentally was the only straight-set win he achieved in the tournament after being stretched to three sets in each of the previous three rounds. Isner had an opening round bye.
Ugo Humbert and Marcel Granollers were the other semifinalists, both losing in tough three-setters, while previous year’s runner-up Ramkumar Ramanathan was ousted in the second round by Ugo Humbert.
Johnson had won the title in 2018 by beating India’s Ramkumar Ramanathan in the final in three gruelling sets. It was the first time that the Indian was featuring in the final of an ATP tournament.
Johnson, who had a first round bye, overcame fellow American Christian Harrison in the second round of the competition, before beating Dudi Sela in the quarter-finals. Johnson then won another straight-set encounter against Marcel Granollers to enter the final where he dropped a set for the first time in the tournament to the unseeded Indian.
Second seeded Mischa Zverev was sent packing in round two, while the top seeded Mannarino made the quarter-final. None of the other seeded players made it past the second round.
