Owing to its proximity in India, huge crowds are expected to attend the very first edition of the Maharashtra Open. Over the years, we have seen players like Stan Wawrinka, Roberto Bautista Agut, Milos Raonic, Marin Cilic, Rafael Nadal and many more.
Even the Indian players such as Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri and Rohan Bopanna have participated regularly in the previous editions of the tournament. And in this upcoming 2019 edition of the Pune Open, the organisers have managed to rope in Kevin Anderson for the tournament too.
This tennis tournament serves as a good layover for many European and American players, who are on the way to the land down under for Australian Open.
The tournament is being backed by IMG-Reliance, who gave the hosting rights to Pune for the next five years. The matches will be played on the tennis courts in Balewadi Sports Complex.
2019 ATP Pune Open Schedule & Dates:
The Pune Open kick-starts from December 31 as 28 singles players take part in the main draw. The qualifying round will be played before the start of the competition and the final will be held on January 6.

Bautista Agut was the 2017 champion while the 2018 edition of the Maharashtra Open was won by Gilles Simon who will go into the next one as one of the players to watch out. Interestingly, Simon scooped up the title by beating Kevin Anderson in the final and following that their respective 2018 went in opposite directions.

What Happened at the 2018 ATP Pune Open?
The previous edition of the Pune Open was won by the Frenchman Gilles Simon who overcame the challenge of South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in the final. Simon triumphed 7-6, 6-2 despite having been an unseeded player in the tournament.
Earlier, Simon had overcome Marin Cilic, the tournament’s top seed while Anderson had needed three sets to thwart Benoit Paire in the semi-finals. 2017 champion Roberto Bautista Agut had been knocked out in round two by Simon.
Four Indian players made it to the main draw of the competition and two of them entered round two before getting knocked out.
