What Happened at the 2018 Monterrey Open?

The tournament last year featured Garbine Muguruza as the top seed. The likes of Magdalena Rybarikova, Lesia Tsurenko, and Timea Babos comprised the remaining top three seeds. Monica Puig and Ana Bogdan also participated in the WTA Monterrey and did exceptionally well.

The competition was ultimately won by Muguruza, who won all of her matches on the way to the final in straight sets. It was one of the better performances by the Spaniard, who spent most of the 2018 season struggling with her form. However, in Monterrey, she didn’t face any major difficulties as she easily breezed past Alison Riske, Ajla Tomljanovic and Bogdan.

In the opposite half, it was the Hungarian Babos who rose to the occasion. Starting as the fourth seed, she moved on to defeat Puig and Sachia Vickery to ultimately reach the final, where she faced Muguruza.

While the Spaniard lost the first set in the final, she staged a comeback and won the remaining sets to take the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
