What Happened at the 2020 ATP New York Open?

Britain’s Kyle Edmund won the 2020 edition of the New York Open by beating Andreas Seppi in the final in straight sets. Edmund had earlier gotten past Miomir Kecmanovic in the last four, but other than that had avoided playing any of the other seeded players as they fell by the wayside.

Top seeded Isner lost in the second round to Jordan Thompson following a first round bye, as did Milos Raonic the second seed. Defending champion and third seeded Reilly Opelka fell in the quarters to Jason Jung.

The 2019 edition of the New York Open was won by Reilly Opelka, who defeated unseeded Brayden Schnur in a tough final in three sets, two of which went to tie-breakers. This was after the defending champion Kevin Anderson opted out of the tournament because of a shoulder injury.

Opelka, an unseeded player, went on to make it to the final after sending fellow American and also the tall-serving John Isner out in the semifinal. He won in three tie-breakers, one of which reached 16-14. Jason Jung sent out the second seeded Frances Tiafoe in straight sets in round two.

In 2018, it was one of those rare tournaments in the year in which the top two seeds in the competition both made it to the final. Top seeded Kevin Anderson defeated Querrey in what turned out to be a match full of fluctuating fortunes with the South African needing a final set tie-breaker to clinch the title.

Earlier, four of the top five seeds had also made it to the semi-final with Anderson needing another final set tie-breaker to beat Kei Nishikori and Querrey requiring another three-setter to get the better of Adrian Mannarino, the fourth seed.

Third seeded John Isner had a first round bye but lost in the second round.
