What Happened at the 2019 ATP New York Open?

An elbow injury meant that defending champion Kevin Anderson had to withdraw from the New York Open last year and John Isner took over the top seeding in the competition. However, it was the unseeded Reilly Opelka who defeated Canadian qualifier Brayden Schnur in the final to clinch the title.

Opelka was involved in an exciting semifinal earlier again the top seed and fellow American Isner, with the two tall-servers going neck in neck before the former won in three tie-breakers. Schnur defeated Sam Querrey in the other semis.

South African No. 1 Anderson won the 2018 title by beating second seeded Sam Querrey in the final in three sets. The final set went the full distance, with Anderson winning a tie-breaker in the third set to clinch the title. Anderson won 4-6, 6-3, 7-6.

He had earlier needed something similar in his semi-final win against Kei Nishikori as well, a final set tie-breaker to win the encounter. Querrey defeated Adrian Mannarino in the semi-finals to progress into the title-decider.

Some of the other main players like John Isner and Ryan Harrison were bumped out in the second round while Steve Johnson and Nikoloz Basilashvili didn’t make it out of the opening round.
