Serena Williams v Bianca Andreescu Head to Head

The two ladies have never met before on the tour.

Andreescu, in the form of a Lifetime

By age, Andreescu may just be 19 years old but her tennis abilities tell a whole different story. 2019 has been a breakthrough year for this young Canadian as she grew to new heights and added a litany of top-ranked players to her win column.

With 38 wins and just four defeats, including her current run in the Canadian Open, she undoubtedly boasts of an impeccable strike rate. During the course of her endeavours, she won the Indian Wells Open title and also reached the final in Auckland.

It gets more interesting when you realize that she was away from the action for over two weeks due to a shoulder injury. This event in Toronto is a homecoming of sorts, marking her first professional event since the French Open. And while a lot of players would have struggled to regain their momentum, for Andreescu, it’s as if things never changed. If anything, she got a whole lot better.

Continuing the trend of delivering upsets, she started easily with wins over Eugenie Bouchard and Daria Kasatkina. Post that, she knocked out two top-five players: Kiki Bertens and Karolina Pliskova to reach the semis. Then, she moved past Sofia Kenin straight sets to reach her second Premier final.

Yet Another Final for Williams

Serena Williams arrived in Toronto, fresh off her runner-up feat in the Wimbledon where she lost to Simona Halep in the final. By the looks of it, she is determined to make up for it by winning the title in Toronto.

The American is playing in the tournament for the first time since 2015. She has won this event thrice in her career and will certainly fancy her chances as she heads into this fixture against Andreescu. With 23 majors to her name, it is hard to imagine her falling to the Canadian.

Williams started the year on a slow note, mainly on account of her injuries but as the season progressed, she picked up the pace. Her US Open preparations are certainly on the right track and despite the outcome here, she will be among the heavy favourites at Flushing Meadows.

In Toronto, she has enjoyed a comfortable run as she dismantled Elise Mertens, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Naomi Osaka, and Marie Bouzkova to reach the final.

Williams v Andreescu Prediction & Tips

There is a massive gap in experience between the two players – something that makes Serena a favourite to win here. To put things in perspective, Andreescu was born in 2000 – the year after Williams won her first Grand Slam title. Clearly, as talented as the Canadian may be, facing former World No. 1 on a surface where she was always excelled is a whole different ball game. Yet, stranger things have happened on the tour and Andreescu may very well walk away with the win here.

Tip: Three sets in the match. (888Sport)
