Grigor Dimitrov v Tommy Paul Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between World No. 20 Dimitrov and World No. 80 Paul.

Dimitrov Shakes off Early Jitters to Advance

Grigor Dimitrov’s Australian Open campaign got off to a decent start on Monday after he shook off early jitters to beat Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Londero 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, 6-4 in 2 hours and 30 minutes. Hitting 17 aces and 47 winners, Dimitrov found the going easy once he got into the groove in the second set.

The Bulgarian, who began his 2020 season at the ATP Cup, had a mixed 2019. A shoulder injury and a patchy form saw him slip to No. 78 in world rankings, his lowest in many years. However, he made an excellent recovery in the latter half of the season, reaching the semifinals of the U.S. Open and the Paris Masters, which saw him climb back to top 20 in the world.

The former World No. 3, whose best Australian Open showing came in 2017 when he reached the semifinals, had made it to the fourth round in Melbourne last year before being beaten by Frances Tiafoe.

Dimitrov, who is yet to reach a major final, will next play American Tommy Paul who himself beat an Argentine player in the first round.

Paul Rallies to Beat Mayer

The 22-year-old Paul rebounded from a set down to defeat 32-year-old Leonardo Mayer 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in 2 hours and 30 minutes on Tuesday.

A solid baseline player, Paul hit 47 winners against the experienced Argentine. A former boy’s singles champion at the French Open, Paul is making his main draw debut at the Australian Open, having previously reached only as far as the second qualifiers in the previous two years.

His only other main draw appearance at a Grand Slam was as a wildcard at the French Open last year, where he was beaten by Dominic Thiem in the first round. However, it was an excellent start to the season for him, as he ran through the qualifiers in Adelaide to make it to the main draw before winning three matches in a row in the main draw.

Paul went down to Lloyd Harris in the semifinal at Adelaide but not before he had gotten himself enough confidence coming into the Australian Open.
