Rafael Nadal v Pablo Carreno Busta Head to Head

This is the fifth time that Nadal and Carreno Busta will face off and the world number one has won them all. Interestingly, three of those matches came on clay and Nadal didn’t drop a set but on hard court, they faced off in Doha in 2016 and Carreno Busta managed to take a set off the champion Spaniard.

Nadal’s Real Test is Yet to Begin

Two rounds, two easy wins. That has been Nadal’s competition so far with Hugo Dellien and Federico Delbonis brushed aside in style at the Australian Open so far. And given his record against Pablo Carreno Busta, it does look like the real test will start from the fourth round where he could face his arch-rival Nick Kyrgios (or Karen Khachanov).

He will now though, he cannot take things lightly even at this stage. It will never be about winning alone for a champion player like Nadal but winning in the most convincing fashion, to create that aura of invincibility around heading into the latter rounds.

Speaking of which, Nadal did enter the tournament on the back of two defeats at the ATP Cup. His loss to Novak Djokovic in the final would have obviously stung a lot but the Spaniard had, before that, even gone down to David Goffin in straight sets. Nadal will want to wipe some of the ignominy of that by crushing a few opponents here before the business end of the competition begins.

Carreno Busta Coming off Two Easy Opponents

Former world number 10 Pablo Carreno Busta featured in one tournament before the Australian Open this season. He won his opener at the Adelaide International but was shocked by Lloyd Harris in the second round, crushed 6-3, 6-3 by the unheralded player.

He started off with an easy opponent at this Grand Slam then, locking horns with the 139th-ranked Jozef Kovalik. Carreno Busta dropped a set in that before coming through and then against Peter Gojowczyk in the second round, he repeated the same – winning in four sets. Again, Gojowczyk is ranked outside the top 100.

All of a sudden now, Carreno Busta will be left to play the world number one, and while it’s tough enough to do that on most occasions, the Spaniard is also coming off two opponents ranked outside the top 120. The difference in quality could get very stark.

Rafael Nadal v Pablo Carreno Busta Predictions & Tips

Nadal is rather short odds of 1/25 to win the match, and 4/11 to win this in straight sets. It’s a fairly risk-free result, Nadal in three but if you are looking for higher risk-higher gain, go for the games market.
