Dominic Thiem v Sumit Nagal Head to Head

Thiem and Nagal have never played each other before this.

Thiem Tested before Munar Withdraws

It was expected to be a straightforward win for one of the pre-tournament challengers, Thiem. And given he stayed on court for less than two hours, it did turn out to be one but it didn’t look like that over the two sets Thie played against Jaume Munar in his opener.

Thiem started off with an early break of serve and continued to hold that advantage till the ninth game of the set. Serving for the set in the 10th game, saw off two break-points for starters but was then broken on the third. A couple of easy holds after that brought the players to a tiebreaker.

And again, at 5-1 up in the tie-breaker, it looked like it was all over bar the shouting for the first set. Thiem had all but pocketed it.

Except Munar thought otherwise and brought it down to 5-4 before Thiem gave himself a couple of set-points. Munar saved those too but later lost the set 8-6 in the tie-breaker.

The second set saw Thiem and Munar early breaks yet again before clinching the crucial break in the eighth game. Thiem served out the next game to clinch the set even as Munar retired from the encounter because of fitness issues.

Thiem had entered this tournament on the back of a shock opening loss at the Cincinnati Open, going down to Filip Krajinovic. It was probably a case of rustiness but now that he has run off with some time on the court, Thiem will be a lot more confident.

Nagal First Indian Since 2013 to Win a Round

Sumit Nagal had shot to fame last US Open when he had taken a set off Roger Federer in their opening round clash. This time around, a lot more was expected out of the young Indian player and he delivered in his opener.

Playing the local boy Blaz Klahn, Nagal came through in four sets, winning 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

What’s interesting to note is this was Nagal’s first match on hard court since the Pau Challenger towards the end of February. And even then, Nagal had struggled to find rhythm, having won just a match – a second round encounter at a Challenger – in the season.

Since Nagal’s return to the tennis following the pandemic break. he has participated in one tournament before the US Open and strangely it came on clay. At the Prague Challenger, Nagal had made it to the quarterfinals where he took a set off Stan Wawrinka but failed to do too much more.

Can he do more than just winning a set?
