Played on the outdoor hard courts of Montreal and Toronto, two cities which alternate between hosting the men’s and women’s competitions, the Canadian Open is typically played in the lead-up to the US Open and used by players as one of the bigger tune-up tournaments to the season’s final Grand Slam.
Other than Wimbledon, the Canadian Open is the oldest tennis tournament in the world at the moment, having been first played in 1881.

What Happened at the 2022 Canadian Open?
In what turned out to be a surprise result, Spain’s Pablo Carreño Busta won the 2022 edition of the Canadian Open when he overcame Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the title-decider. He won 3–6, 6–3, 6–3 in a competitive final to lift his first ever Masters 1000 tournament.
The women’s singles final was won by Simona Halep, who needed a three-setter against Beatriz Haddad Maia in the final. This was the third time Halep was winning this tournament.
Camila Giorgi was the winner of the 2021 Canadian Open title on the women’s draw while Daniil Medvedev won the men’s singles title by overcoming Reilly Opelka.
The 2020 edition of the tournament was cancelled because of the pandemic, the only time during the Open Era it wasn’t held.
Bianca Andreescu had gone into the 2019 Canadian Open as an unseeded player but went on to win the title. She was leading Serena Williams 3-1 in the final before the American retired from the match, leaving the Canadian a winner, with Andreescu becoming the first from her country in 50 years to do so at the Canadian Open.
She had earlier beaten fellow Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, Daria Kasatkina, fifth seeded Kiki Bertens, third seeded Karolina Pliskova and American Sofia Kenin to make it to the final. None of the seeded players, bar Williams, made the semifinals while Naomi Osaka, Pliskova, Simona Halep and Elina Svitoline were all quarterfinalists.
In the men’s section of the draw, Rafael Nadal entered the 2019 tournament as the top seed and apart from dropping a set to Fabio Fognini, ran off a winner. He crushed Daniil Medvedev in the final of the tournament, winning 6-3, 6-0 to lift the title.
Nadal had a walkover from Gael Monfils in the semifinals while Medvedev overcame fellow Russian Karen Khachanov in the other last-four encounter. Second and third seeds Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev were losing quarterfinalists as well while Stefanos Tsitsipas was knocked out in the second round.
