Because of its proximity to the French Open, it is one of the most sought after competition by the players as they look to prepare for the second Grand Slam competition of the year.
First played in 1897 it became a part of the open era in tennis from 1969 and has been a major tournament in the Grand Prix Tour, becoming one of the Grand Prix Super Series top tier competition in the past. It’s also been a part of the Rothmans Spring Mediterranean Circuit and the World Championship Tennis circuit and then the ATP Championship Series Single Week tournament at different times over the years.
It’s now a part of the Masters series but the only Masters tournament that is not mandatory to play for the players and yet, forms a very attractive part of most top players’ calendar.
The upcoming edition of the Monte-Carlo Masters will be played between April 10 and 16, 2023. And it comes as no surprise that Rafael Nadal has dominated the event ruthlessly over the years and he is set to enter the 2019 Monte-Carlo Masters as a heavy favourite.
In totality, he has won the tournament 11 times, with eight of those wins being continuous in nature between 2005-2012. He is also on a three-tournament winning spree with Novak Djokovic having last won it in 2015.

Monte-Carlo Masters 2023 Preview
Will be updated after the Australian Open once we have had a look at player form on clay.
What Happened at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters?
Stefanos Tsitsipas will kick-start the Monte-Carlo Masters this season as the two-time defending champion, having won the title in 2021 and 2022. He defeated Andrey Rublev in the 2021 edition final while overcoming Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the title-decider of 2022.
This was after the the 2020 edition was cancelled because of the pandemic and Fabio Fognini had shocked the tennis world with the title win in 2019. He stunned Rafael Nadal in the semifinal before defeating Dusan Lajovic in the final to lift his first ever Masters trophy.
Nadal was aiming to make it four Monte Carlo Masters titles in a row but was stalled in his tracks by the Italian.
Top seeded Novak Djokovic was upset by Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals before the Russian himself went down in a surprise result to Lajovic. Borna Coric, Guido Pella and Lorenzo Sonego were the other three quarterfinalists.
Earlier, in 2018, for the third time in a row, and 11th time in his career, the master of clay, Rafael Nadal, went on to clinch the title at the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2018. And much like most times on clay, he barely had to break into a sweat to get the better of all his opponents, dropping a mere 21 games across five matches to lift the title.
Even by his standards, that was some sort of a clean sweep that ensured not too many players challenged him in the tournament.
Top seeded in the 2018 edition, Nadal started off with a win over Aljaz Bedene in his second round match following a first round bye, and that was followed by a demolition of Karen Khachanov in round three. His easiest win came against Austria’s Dominic Thiem, a player he would go on to defeat later in the final at the French Open as well before crushing Grigor Dimitrov in the semi-finals and Kei Nishikori in the final.
Alexander Zverev was the other semi-finalist while second seeded Marin Cilic, fifth seeded Thiem, sixth seeded David Goffin and Richard Gasquet made it as far as the quarter-finals. Novak Djokovic went down to Thiem in the third round.
In the 2017 Monte-Carlo Masters, Rafael Nadal faced his compatriot Albert Ramos Vinolas in the final, whom he defeated in straight sets comfortably.
It was a good tournament for the Spaniard, who conquered the likes of David Goffin and Alexander Zverev with ease. While the likes of Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka also participated in the tournament, they fumbled in the earlier rounds, leaving the fans disappointed.
Murray, for instance, was sent packing in only his second match, while Djokovic managed to reach the quarter-final before going down to David Goffin. Wawrinka was a third round casualty while Marin Cilic lost in the last-eight round.
However, in this edition, the aforementioned players are expected to return in the best of health and hopefully, form.
