Sofia Kenin became the toast of the nation when she became a surprise winner of the Australian Open in 2020. With a solid few performances under her belt even before that it is only interesting to try and understand which racquet does Sofia Kenin use. More information on that and the specifications of her racquets below.
After having begun her career in 2013, Kenin won her first title at the ITF circuit in 2016 and made it two that year soon after. A couple of tournament wins followed over the next two years as well before Kenin announced herself at the 2019 Hobart International.
Kenin stunned the top seeded Caroline Garcia in the first round and then overcame Kirsten Flipkens and Alize Cornet at the later stages of the tournament before going on to lift the trophy. She was unseeded.
Even bigger success followed at the Mallorca Open on grass, where she was a winner over Elise Mertens, Anastasija Sevastova and Belinda Bencic in three successive matches to win the title. And very soon she made it three for 2019.
The American lifted the Guangzhou Open, easing to the victory against surprise finalist Samantha Stosur.
While Kenin was winning competitions on the WTA tour in 2019, her Grand Slam performances before the 2020 Australian Open might have led to some frustration.
Her best showing at majors was the fourth round of the 2019 French Open, and in none of the other Grand Slams Kenin even managed that. In fact after making the third round of the 2017 US Open, there were opening exits at the Australian Open and French Open in the following year before she won a match at Wimbledon – her first main draw win there.
However, coming into 2020, Kenin had the confidence of having done well at the WTA competitions the previous year and ran through Cori Gauff (get Gauff’s racquet specs here), Ash Barty and Garbine Muguruza to make the Australian Open title her own.
Kenin, unlike some of her fellow American tennis players, uses a combination of power and other shots to advance her game – including being a master of disguise about the direction of her backhand shots. Earlier known to be a grinder on court, Kenin’s aggression on court came through in 2018 without overusing power as a facet.
