Victoria Azarenka v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head

The two players have met only once on the tour and that meeting took place in the 2016 Miami Open. Azarenka knocked out Muguruza in straight sets and eventually moved on to win the tournament.

Azarenka’s First Singles Final in Three Years

The last time Azarenka reached the final on the WTA Tour was in 2016 in the Miami Open. Since then, her form has taken a sharp hit on the back of pregnancy hiatus and off-court issues. Her return to the tour in 2018 wasn’t that exciting although, she did reach the mixed doubles final in the Wimbledon.

Nonetheless, Azarenka has still got a lot of tennis left in her and she is particularly determined to reach the heights she was once at. Her start to the year wasn’t that impressive, given that she lost early in Auckland, Melbourne, and St. Petersburg. However, two of those three losses came against Venus Williams and Petra Kvitova.

A similar tale was observed in the Indian Wells and Miami too, as she lost in the second round to Serena Williams and Caroline Garcia respectively.

But in Monterrey, we saw an Azarenka that reminded us of her sensational form in the first half of the decade. She reached the final comfortably, dispatching the likes of Miyu Kato, Zarina Diyas, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and most recently, Angelique Kerber.

Muguruza Finds her Stride Too

Just like Azarenka, Muguruza too spent most of her recent time on the tour struggling with her recent form. However, in her case, her struggles merely took her out of the top 10.

As the defending champion in Monterrey, there is a lot at stake here for Muguruza but more than that, she is determined to prove that she has still got it. This is her first final since the last year’s Monterrey Open – which she won after defeating Timea Babos in the final.

This time around, she downed Margarita Gasparyan, Kristina Mladenovic, and Magdalena Rybarikova comfortably to reach the final.

In comparison to her Belarusian adversary, she has been in a fairly better form this season. The Spaniard reached the fourth round in the Australian Open and the quarter-final in Hua Hin and Indian Wells. With the exception of a couple of defeats, most of her losses have been against top players like Kiki Bertens, Elina Svitolina, and Karolina Pliskova.

Azarenka v Muguruza Tips & Predictions

This is going to be a tight encounter that is too close to call. On one hand, Azarenka has more experience than Muguruza while on the other, the latter has been in a much better form of late.

Both of them have got a point to prove in Monterrey and will definitely put up a good performance.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 17/20 (betway)
