Fabio Fognini v Jiri Vesely Head to Head

The two have met four times before, with Fognini leading their head-to-head series by three matches lo one. The Italian won their previous two matches on clay, in Rio in 2015, and Umag in Croatia in 2017, and followed that up by beating the Czech at Wimbledon later that same year. However, Vesely got his revenge at last year’s Wimbledon, winning in four sets.

Feisty Fognini Hopes for Clay Court Turnaround

Fognini, the world number 18, is very much a clay court specialist, with all but one of his eight ATP senior titles coming on his favourite surface. They include two wins in 2018; in Brazil and Sweden, with another final in Mexico, where he was beaten by Juan Martin del Potro.

His 2019 results to date have been disappointing, with his best performance coming in Melbourne where he reached the third round.

But seeded 12 for that tournament, he was beaten by the lower ranked Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, and then suffered first round losses in Cordoba, Buenos Aires, Rio, and Indian Wells. The Italian did at least win a match in Miami, but then lost to Roberto Bautista-Agut in straight sets.

Fognini’s biggest enemy on court may be himself. He has been known to lose his cool on court, and was ejected from the 2017 US Open for swearing at a female umpire. He will need to master his temperament against Vesely.

Vesely More Familiar with the Challenger Tour

25 year-old Czech Vesely is currently just outside the world’s top 100. He has one ATP career title to his name, the Auckland Open in 2015, and lost his other final that same year on the clay of Romania to Spain’s Guillermo Garcia Lopez.

However, he does have 6 ATP Challenger clay court titles to his name, the most recent of which came in the Czech Open of 2017.

In terms of 2019, his best results to date have come on the Challenger tour, with a semi-final in Canberra, and quarter-final in Marbella to his credit. In terms of the senior ATP tour, a last 16 appearance in Pune can be claimed.

Fognini v Vesely Predictions & Tips

Fognini is odds-on favourite for this match at 10/17, whilst Vesely is priced at 13/8. The Italian has shown very little form this year but, back on his favourite surface, and with a superior head-to-head record against his opponent, he should win, provided he can keep his emotions in check.

Tip: Fognini to win in straight sets: 5/4 (Betway)
