Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

This is the first time that the two players are meeting on the ATP Tour.

Tsonga Slowly Gaining Momentum

The Frenchman has started his campaign in Marrakech on a promising note, with a couple of straight-set victories against Cedrik-Marcel Stebe and Kyle Edmund. He looked confident throughout the week and is now just three victories away from getting his second singles title of the season.

Tsonga struggled greatly with injuries last season and as a consequence, he was knocked out of the top 100 on the tour. This year, however, has been a resurgence of sorts for the former French No. 1.

He arrived in Marrakech with a win-loss record of 11-4. Tsonga won the tournament in Montpellier and lifted his first trophy since the 2017 European Open. He also had a promising run in Brisbane and Rotterdam.

At the same time, not everything has been picture perfect for Tsonga. He lost in the early rounds in the ATP Marseille and Miami Masters, succumbing cheaply to the likes of Andrey Rublev and Pablo Cuevas.

Sonego Looking Confident, but Can He Topple Tsonga?

The 23-year-old Italian started the tournament as a qualifier and has already delivered a couple of impressive wins. In the opening round, he defeated the fifth seed Lazlo Djere and then moved past Robin Haase. He achieved all of this without dropping a single set.

Lorenzo has spent most of his time on the tour this year alternating between the Challenger and ATP circuits in a bid to build his form. In the former, his best run came in Phoenix where he reached the quarterfinal. In the latter, he reached the second round in Miami as a qualifier before losing to John Isner.

Apart from this, the Italian also reached the second round in Cordoba and the Argentina Open.

Tsonga v Sonego Predictions & Tips

Tsonga will start this match as the favourite to win, given his massive experience in comparison to Sonego’s. However, the Frenchman is still not as sharp as one would expect him to be. Sonego, being young and sailing high on energy, can very well push Tsonga to the limit and give him a good fight.

Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 10/11 (Unibet)
