Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Taylor Fritz Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two men.

Tsonga, Continuing his Recovery from Injury

Now ranked at 116 in the world, Tsonga is continuing his recovery after injury blighted so much of his 2018 season, and caused him to tumble down the world rankings.

2019 has seen him reach the semi-final in Brisbane and then clinch the 17th senior ATP title of his career in Montpellier. Since then though his results have been inconsistent and, after missing Indian Wells with injury, he failed to make it out of qualifying in Miami.

However, to get practice on clay ahead of the European season, he entered the Grand Prix Hassan II tournament in Casablanca and will contest the semi-final with Benoit Paire later .

Despite this, clay has been his least preferred surface over the years, and it does not suit his serve-volley game. While he did not play at this tournament last year, he was bumped out in the second round at Monte-Carlo Masters in 2017.

Fritz, Another Hard-Court Player

World number 58 Fritz has already enjoyed success in 2019, having won his fifth ITF Challenger tour title in Newport Beach. On the senior tour, his best result of the year so far came in Melbourne where he reached the third round before losing to Roger Federer. There was also a quarter-final appearance in Auckland.

Recently though he has struggled, and has not gone beyond the first round in the last four tournaments he has entered – Delray Beach, Indian Wells, Miami, and Houston.

He has little form on clay, never having even reached a final on that surface in his ITF career which makes it easier for Tsonga.

Tsonga v Fritz Predictions & Tips

Neither man would claim that clay is their favourite surface. However, despite being the lower ranked player, Tsonga will start as the odds-on favourite for this match. He has the greater experience and know-how, and, being French, this will be virtually a home tournament for him and he will have all the support.

Tip: Tsonga to win in straight sets: 3/4 (Unibet)
