Marco Cecchinato v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

This will be the first time that Cecchinato and Wawrinka will face off against each other at the top level.

Cecchinato on His Favourite Surface…

…and by some distance. To give a context, last year, Cecchinato played 22 matches on non-clay surfaces and won just 7 of them. On the other hand, on clay, Cecchinato had a win-loss record of 37-15, which included a title win at Umag, and a French Open semi-final in which he had also defeated Novak Djokovic.

This has been a norm for the Italian across all seasons rather than an exception and it was no different this year. He was a first round loser at the Auckland Open and Australian Open earlier this but come clay in Buenos Aires, Cecchinato went on to win the title by beating Deigo Schwartzman in the final.

He was leading 4-0 against Damir Dzumhur in his first round match here before his opponent had to retire due to injury and Cecchinato advanced to set up this meeting.

Wawrinka Has a Fight on His Hand

Stan Wawrinka is a former French Open winner and has done well otherwise on clay as well, but the big question is can he play at the same level against a upcoming clay court specialist? Beating the Italian on dirt won’t be an easy thing at all.

The Swiss player is a former winner at the Monte-Carlo too, having lifted the title in 2014 but since then has never made it past the quarter-finals. This time around, he had a tough opening round fixture against Lucas Pouille but came through unscathed, winning in straight sets.

And while the surface has been different, and despite him making a comeback this year, Wawrinka has already gotten the better of Milos Raonic, Denis Shapovalov and Kei Nishikori earlier this year which signals his form too.

Cecchinato v Wawrinka Predictions & Tips

Given Cecchinato’s love for clay and Wawrinka’s solid play this season, it would be a tough one to call and a hard-fought encounter. One feels a three-setter will be a just result for which betway are offering 6/4.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (Betway)
