Rafael Nadal v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head

There have been 12 previous meetings between these two players and Nadal has a whopping 11-1 record against Dimitrov. Dimitrov’s only win against the Spaniard came in 2016 in Beijing, and Nadal is 4-0 on clay against him. In fact the Bulgarian has won just one set on that surface while their most recent meeting came at the previous year’s Monte-Carlo Masters.

Nadal Fires off a Warning in Second Round Win

All eyes were on Rafael Nadal going into this tournament – as they usually are but even more so given the context. Here was the greatest player of all time on clay but returning to the sport after a bad set of few months since 2018 that had seen him withdraw or retire from his matches and tournaments because of injuries including one in his previous match against Roger Federer.

So the curiosity was whether his return to clay, his favourite surface by some distance and more, would be more of the same Nadal magic or would fitness and rustiness remain a concern.

Nothing of the latter happened as Nadal ran through his opponent, Robert Bautista Agut, a fellow Spaniard who had himself come into the tournament with some scalps under his belt prior to Monte-Carlo. A 6-1, 6-1 win ensured any doubts that there were over Nadal’s fitness were laid to rest, at least for now.

Slow Start for Grigor Dimitrov This Year

Injuries have obviously played a part but Dimitrov’s season has been a slow one in terms of the number of tournaments he has played so far. Coming into this tournament, he had played just three competitions before this in 2019 and his best performance was at the Australian Open where he managed to reach the fourth round.

A quarter-final exit at Brisbane and a third round ouster at the Miami Masters were the other two results and as a consequence, the once-third-ranked player is now struggling at 28th in the world and wasn’t obviously seeded in this tournament.

And while playing against Nadal is another beast altogether, it must be quickly said, he has looked in decent touch in his first two rounds – beating Marco Berrettini and Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets to advance to this third round match-up.
