Simona Halep v Kristina Mladenovic Head to Head
The two players share an interesting rivalry dating back to the 2014 French Open. In the five times they have met since then, Mladenovic has won on three occasions while Halep has clinched only two victories.
They last met in the final of the 2017 Madrid Open, where Halep won in three sets.
Halep Looking Confident Once Again
Halep may have started the season on a rather shaky note but in the recent weeks, she has found her rhythm back and looks very poised.
Following a disappointing performance in the Australian Open Series, she reached the final in WTA Doha and the quarterfinal in Dubai. As for her run in the Sunshine Doubles, she lost in the fourth round in Indian Wells while in Miami, she went as far as the semifinal.
Halep has had her fair share of losses this season although, they can probably be attributed to her decision to play without a coach. Nonetheless, she is now the World No. 2 once again and with the way Romanian is playing, she is likely to reach the top soon.
She was instrumental in her team’s success in the quarterfinal against the Czech Republic. Halep won both of her matches, defeating Katerina Siniakova and Karolina Pliskova.
Can Mladenovic Deliver when Needed?
While Mladenovic is an excellent doubles player and is likely to win the doubles tie of this fixture against Romania, all eyes will be on her to perform in the singles matches.
She has the advantage of going against a player whom she leads narrowly in the head to head tally. However, it won’t be enough for Mladenovic, give her recent form on the tour.
Her best result of the season came in Monterrey, where she reached the quarterfinal. In Indian Wells and Miami, she incurred early exits and had a pretty similar run in other events like the Australian Open, WTA Sydney, and St. Petersburg Open.
At the same time, she has history on her side. In her last four appearances in the Fed Cup, she has made it to the quarterfinal and beyond with France. In 2016, her side was the runner-up in the tournament while last year, she made it as far as the semifinal.

Given Halep’s recent form in comparison to Mladenovic’s, it comes as no surprise to see her start as the favourite. Romania can be assured of a positive start in their bid to reach the final of the Fed Cup.
