Fabio Fognini v Dusan Lajovic Head to Head

These two players will be playing in their first match ever.

Fognini, What a Difference a Week Makes!

Fognini is almost unrecognisable from the man who began the week short of form, and bothered by persistent injuries.

He almost was knocked out in the first round, but hauled himself back from the brink after being a set and two breaks down to Andrey Rublev of Russia.

The Italian then had the fortune of a bye in the second round, but there was nothing lucky about his straight sets win over the number three seed Alexander Zverev in the third round. His fighting qualities were evident again as he came from a set down to beat Borna Coric of Croatia in the quarter-final.

However, few gave him much chance against the King of Clay and 11-time champion here, Rafael Nadal. Despite this, the Italian produced a major shock and outplayed the Spaniard to reach his maiden Masters final.

Lajovic, Best Week of His Career

28-year-old Lajovic is enjoying the best week of his tennis career. Ranked outside the world’s top 100 about a year ago, he has sailed through to the final without dropping a set, leaving a trail of seeds in his wake, including David Goffin and Dominic Thiem.

His latest victim was Daniil Medvedev of Russia of Russia in their semi-final on Saturday, with the Serb continuing to throw the form book out of the window. Incidentally, in the two matches he played on clay before this competition, Lajovic did not win a single set, losing at the Buenos Aires Open and the Rio Open and for him to then come into this tournament and make it as far as the final is a big achievement.

Whatever happens in Sunday final, Lajovic will come out of this tournament a winner.

Fognini v Lajovic Odds

Almost nobody would have predicted that either man would make the final this week, as the tournament has thrown up surprise after surprise. As the seeded and higher ranked player, Fognini will start as the odds-on favourite at 8/15, whilst Lajovic is priced at 7/4. The Italian should win, but whatever happens, a new name will be carved on the trophy tomorrow.
