Angelique Kerber v Donna Vekic Head to Head

The pair have met twice before, both on hard courts, with the German winning on both occasions in straight sets. Her first win came at the Canadian Masters in 2017, and she followed that up with victory at the Australian Open in 2018.

Kerber Chasing Her Third Stuttgart Title

The world number five Kerber is challenging for her third Stuttgart title having won the tournament in 2015 and 2016, in what is a home event for the German player.

The defending Wimbledon champion is challenging for her first title of the year, having come close when she reached the final in Indian Wells, only to lose to Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu. She has also reached two-semi-finals in Doha and also in Monterrey, the last event in which she participated.

Playing in front of a home crowd and in a tournament she enjoys, she will hoping for another extended run in Stuttgart.

Vekic, Similar 2019 Record to Kerber

The world number 25 player Vekic has a remarkably similar record to Kerber in terms of 2019 results. She too, has reached one final – the St.Petersburg Ladies Trophy – which she lost, in her case to Kiki Bertens, of the Netherlands. And like her opponent, she has also reached two semi-finals in Brisbane and Acapulco.

She lost in the first round in Indian Wells, however, and, since being beaten by Petra Kvitova in Miami, she has not played competitively since, so will be a little ring rusty.

Kerber v Vekic Tips & Predictions

Kerber, as the seeded player, and the local favourite is odds-on to win this match at 1/2, whilst Vekic is priced at 24/13. This is not an easy match for Kerber to start her challenge for a third Stuttgart Open title with,  but she should have enough to defeat the Croat.

Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 17/20 (betway)
