Jelena Ostapenko v Anastasija Sevastova Head to Head
These two players have met once before and it was the more experienced Latvian Sevastova who emerged victorious during the qualifiers of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow almost four years ago. However, Ostapenko has grown to become the more accomplished Latvian on the WTA tour in recent times and she will be keen to avenge that loss.
Ostapenko Keen To Put Fed Cup Loss Behind Her
There will be no room for sentimentality in Stuttgart following Latvia’s elimination in the Fed Cup World Group at the hands of Germany. Ostapenko was part of the Latvia team that were deservedly beaten in Riga. The 21-year-old lost both her singles rubbers which ultimately proved decisive.
She will turn her attention to an important WTA Premier event which boasts a star-studded field at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.
Ostapenko has endured a tumultuous start to 2019 in which she failed to win back-to-back matches prior to Charleston. In fact it was at the Charleston clay court event she managed to string two wins on the trot for the first time since the 2018 US Open.
The 2017 French Open champion has explained that her terrible run of form was majorly due to a wrist problem she has been carrying since the off-season, but she has vowed to bounce back during the clay swing.
Can Sevastova Overcome Her Back Problem?
Anastasija Sevastova was reportedly dealing with a severe back injury which forced her to withdraw from Latvia’s Fed Cup team during the weekend.
The 29-year-old instead decided to travel to Stuttgart and elected to play at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. It is feared that her injury could need surgery and it will be interesting to see if she might even play after all.
Sevastova, like Ostapenko, is under a dry spell in terms of wins in 2019. She was beaten by lowly-ranked Jessica Pegula during her recent outing in Charleston.
Ostapenko v Sevastova Predictions & Tips
Sevastova is starting this match as a slight favorite according to the odd-makers and that is due to Ostapenko’s bad run of results and not because Sevastova is playing any better. Reports are circulating that the 29-year-old could have back surgery and that does not feel me with confidence going into this match. Looking at Ostapenko’s losses this year, most matches have been very close.
She has also impressed by her comeback win from 5-1 down against Shelby Rogers in Charleston and the younger Latvian might have the edge in this one.
Tip: Ostapenko to win: 13/10 (888Sport)
