Daniil Medvedev v Albert Ramos-Vinolas Head to Head
The pair has never played each other before this encounter at the Barcelona Open.
Medvedev, Taking Great Heart from Monte-Carlo
Medvedev had no form on clay to speak of going into Monte-Carlo last week, having won just two of the 13 senior ATP matches he had won on that surface. Yet he completely overturned that form with a run to the semi-finals which included victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, and then the first win of his career against Novak Djokovic.
He did lose in the semi-final to Dusan Lajovic, but those four wins before that would have given him immense confidence after an underwhelming Sunshine Masters performance.
Whilst he will always be happier on a hard court, he may just have persuaded himself he can play on clay, and, another good week in Barcelona could underline that fact.
Ramos-Vinolas, Clay Court Specialist Struggling of Late
By contrast, Ramos-Vinolas would describe himself as a clay court specialist. The world number 91’s one senior ATP title – the 2016 Swedish Open – and all seven of his junior titles all were achieved on that surface.
Despite this, the last three clay court tournaments he has entered have all resulted in early disappointment – losing in the first round in the Challenger event in Antipolis, and again in Marrakech, and then failing to get out of the qualifying tournament in Monte-Carlo.
However, he has done better here – beating Alexi Popyrin of Australia, and compatriot Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in qualifying, and then beating Cameron Norrie of Great Britain with ease in the first round.
Medvedev v Ramos-Vinolas Predictions & Tips
Medvedev is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 11/18, whilst Ramos-Vinolas is priced at 13/8. A week ago the Russian may have been approaching this match with trepidation, but, with his new-found confidence on clay, should win easily enough. A straight-set win beckons for Medvedev in this one.
Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 13/10 (888Sport)
