Angelique Kerber v Andrea Petkovic Head to Head
Interestingly, these two Germans have played each other a whopping 11 times with Kerber having an obvious advantage, with eight wins and three defeats. However, in the more recent times, they have played just twice, and even that is stretching back four years, both of which were won by Kerber in straight sets. On clay, both of their encounters were also won by Kerber including one at Charleston.
Former Winner Kerber Starts Clay-Court Swing
Kerber began well earlier this season with four wins at the Hopman Cup and a finals appearance at the Indian Wells Open. However there will be a few results that would rankle her hard.
A fourth round exit at the hands of Danielle Collins at the Australian Open and losing to Bianca Andreescu twice in a span of a couple of weeks would have been at the crux of those results. Especially those twin-losses in which she made her frustration known to her opponent by calling her a drama queen.
Clay isn’t Kerber’s most favourite surface, with her three Grand Slam titles also coming on the non-clay surfaces. Last season as well, she won no titles on clay and despite making it as far as the quarter-finals at the French Open, that could be one Achilles Heel her opponent might look to exploit.
Off Colour Petkovic Might Not Get Respite
Such has been Petkovic’s year, 2019, that it would be expecting too much from her to challenge the higher-ranked German opponent. Ever since the start of the season, the only time Petkovic actually managed to win two matches in a row was in the Brisbane International qualifying rounds and even there she did not make it to the main draw.
Since then, Petkovic’s record has been woeful in main draws of competitions. In the seven matches she had played before the start of this tournament, she had a 2-5 win-loss record and looked like in deep trouble.
That she won her opener Sara Tormo Sorribes would have come as a huge surprise to most fans following the sport, but the 71st-ranked Petkovic would take a lot of confidence from it and hope she can push on further. Or at least push Kerber harder than one would expect.
