Daniil Medvedev v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head
The two players have met only once on the ATP Tour. That match took place in the Indian Wells earlier this year. Medvedev won that fixture in straight sets.
They also met in the qualifiers of the Canadian Open last season, where the Russian came out as the victor.
Medvedev’s Remarkable Run this Year
The Russian arrived in Barcelona with a win-loss record of 21-7. He was the runner-up in the Brisbane International and later won the Sofia Open. In fact, with the sole exception of ATP Dubai, Medvedev has made it to the third round and beyond in all the tournaments he played in.
He kickstarted his clay season on an equally mesmerizing note in Monte Carlo last week. The World No. 14 reached the semifinal there after defeating the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic.
That performance took him closer to a top 10 debut and if he continues to play this way, it is only a matter of time before he gets it. Over here, he started his campaign with a three-set win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
McDonald, Looking Confident
The 24-year-old American started his run in the tournament against the Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel. After knocking him out with 6-2, 6-2, he met the veteran Frenchman, the number 11 seed Gilles Simon.
With all the odds stacked against him, McDonald delivered one of the best results of his career. In an hour and 16 minutes, he moved past Simon with 6-3, 6-2. He stayed firm under pressure and saved seven out of eight break points to march ahead.
McDonald has had such moments a few times already this season. He was the runner-up in the Dallas Challenger and later reached the semifinal in ATP Delray Beach, after defeating Juan Martin Del Potro. Furthermore, he was also a quarterfinalist in the Mexican Open.
Medvedev v McDonald Predictions & Tips
Medvedev will start this one as the favourite but it won’t be an easy match for him. McDonald has been quite good this season although, he has failed to get a firm grip on his form and consistency. But in Barcelona, following a clinical win over Simon, he has the much-needed momentum to put up a fight here.
